  • Day 5 – From Historic Georgetown to the High Country of Granby

    Colorado Road Trip 2025

    Morning in Georgetown

We started Day 5 of our Colorado road trip with a peaceful morning stroll through the charming streets of Georgetown, Colorado. Nestled in a valley surrounded by towering peaks, this historic mining town offers a quiet escape with its preserved 19th-century architecture, colorful storefronts, and welcoming atmosphere.

    Crossing Berthoud Pass

By midday, we hit the road again, heading north over the dramatic Berthoud Pass. At over 11,000 feet, the pass offered sweeping views of snow-dusted peaks, dense evergreen forests, and winding mountain roads. We paused at the Continental Divide sign to take in the scenery. We even felt a few snow flakes.

    Arrival in Granby

Our destination for the next couple of days is https://www.townofgranby.com/Granby, where we’ll be visiting friends and enjoying the slower pace of mountain life. Nestled near the western entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park, Granby is a perfect base for exploring the area’s natural beauty. Day 3: Canyon Vistas and a Moonlit Ascent

    Colorado Road Trip 2025

Morning Hikes in Colorado National Monument

We kicked off the day with a series of short hikes that showcased the monument’s breathtaking geology and expansive canyon views:

Canyon Rim Trail – A perfect introduction to the park’s dramatic cliffs.

Window Rock Trail – A short walk to a stunning natural window overlooking the canyon.

Alcove Trail – A peaceful path with unique rock formations and quiet alcoves.

Otto’s Trail – Named after John Otto, the monument’s founding advocate, this trail offers one of the best views of Independence Monument.

Scenic Drive Along Rim Rock Drive

After hiking, we took our time cruising along Rim Rock Drive, a 23-mile scenic route that winds through the heart of the monument. Every curve revealed new vistas—towering monoliths, deep canyons, and distant mesas.

Towards the end of the drive, we were lucky enough to come upon a herd of grazing bighorn sheep, calmly navigating the rocky terrain just off the roadside. It was a quiet, majestic moment that reminded us of the wild beauty that thrives in these rugged landscapes.

Eastbound on I-70: Beauty in Motion

Leaving the monument, we headed east on Interstate 70, often called one of the most beautiful stretches of highway in America. The road climbs into the Rockies, passing through dramatic canyons, tunnels, and alpine forests.

As we neared Dillon, the sky treated us to a spectacular show: a full moon rising over the Rocky Mountains, casting a silver glow on the peaks and following us all the way to Georgetown, where we’ll be staying for the next two nights.

  • Day 2: Into the Mountains and the Canyon

🏔️ Monarch Pass: A High Country Welcome

We began our day with a brief but breathtaking stop at the summit of Monarch Pass (11,312 ft). The crisp mountain air and panoramic views of the Sawatch Range were a perfect way to kick off our journey into Colorado’s high country.

🌊 Curecanti National Recreation Area: Canyon and Reservoirs

Driving through Curecanti National Recreation Area, we followed the Gunnison River past steep canyon walls and shimmering reservoirs. This scenic corridor is a hidden gem, offering dramatic landscapes and hints of fall color.

🏞️ Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park: Nature’s Drama

Our main destination today was Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, where the canyon’s depth and steepness is stunning. We explored several overlooks along the South Rim:

Tomichi Point – Our first dramatic view of the canyon

Gunnison Point – A jaw-dropping look into the depths

Pulpit Rock and Chasm View – Sheer vertical drops and narrow canyon walls

Painted Wall – The tallest cliff in Colorado, streaked with ancient rock formations

We ended our visit with a peaceful hike to Warner Point, which offered sweeping views of the Uncompahgre Valley and distant San Juan Mountains.

Tonight we’re staying in Grand Junction. Tomorrow, we’ll head into Colorado National Monument to continue our adventure.

  • Colorado Road Trip 2025 – Day 1: Texas to Trinidad

Colorado Road Trip 2025 – Day 1: Texas to Trinidad

    We’re on the road! 🚗💨

Today was all about the drive — we left San Antonio early and made our way across Texas, heading north toward Colorado. It was a long stretch with only quick stops for gas and restroom breaks, but the excitement of the journey, and plenty of podcasts, kept us going.

We made a brief detour to Capulin Volcano National Monument in northeastern New Mexico. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing government shutdown, all facilities were closed — including the road to the summit. Still, it was nice to get a glimpse of the volcano before continuing on.

By evening, we arrived in Trinidad, Colorado, ready to check in and relax. Our first stop was the Days Inn where we had a confirmed reservation, but things got a little strange. A person outside the office informed us that their internet was down and they couldn’t check in guests with reservations. They offered a room if we paid cash — but that felt a bit too sketchy, so we moved on.

Thankfully, we found a room at the Hilton Garden Inn nearby. It was a much better experience, and after settling in, we enjoyed a peaceful walk around the area before calling it a night.

Tomorrow, we cross the Rockies and head to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. Can’t wait to see what Day 2 brings!

After browsing through the bustling stores and booths we stopped for lunch at the Red Snapper, a local favorite known for its fresh seafood and laid-back atmosphere. The food was delicious.

We climbed to the top for panoramic views of the bay and the Queen Isabella Causeway stretching toward South Padre Island. • 🌴 South Padre 2025 – Day 2: Turtles, Birds, and Towers of Sand

🌴 South Padre 2025 – Day 2: Turtles, Birds, and Towers of Sand

Our second day on South Padre Island was packed with wildlife, sunshine, and a bit of sandy artistry.

We kicked off the morning at Sea Turtle Inc., where we met some of the island’s most beloved residents. From temporary rescuees to permanent resident sea turtles, the center offered a fascinating look at conservation in action. It was inspiring to see how much care goes into protecting these creatures of the sea — and the educational exhibits made it easy to appreciate the challenges they face.

Lunch was a breezy affair at Tequila Sunset, where we grabbed a table on the deck overlooking the water. It’s hard to beat good food with a view like that.

In the early afternoon, we wandered through the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center. The boardwalks took us through marshes and mangroves teeming with life — herons, coots, and even a Roseate Spoonbill. The center also host some resident alligators that became to habituated to human areas on the island.

Then came one of the day’s highlights: sandcastle lessons with Anubis Morrison at Sandy Feet Sandcastles. With expert guidance, we learned the secrets of stacking, carving, and detailing — and by the end, we had a good idea of how to create our own sand “art”. It’s amazing how a pile of sand can become something magical with the right tools and a little know-how.

To wrap up the day, we visited the South Padre Island Sand Castle Village, where Anubis’ own masterpiece stood among a collection of stunning sculptures. Each castle was a work of art, full of whimsy and intricate detail. It was the perfect way to end a day that celebrated creativity and nature in equal measure.
