    The Crown of the Continent

Far away in Montana, hidden from view by clustering mountain-peaks, lies an unmapped northwestern corner- the Crown of the Continent. The water from the crusted snowdrift which caps the peak of a lofty mountain there trickles into tiny rills, which hurry along north, south, east and west, and growing to rivers, at last pour their currents into three seas. From this mountain-peak the Pacific and the Arctic oceans and the Gulf of Mexico receive each its tribute. Here is a land of striking scenery.

Lee Metcalf Wilderness – Gallatin National Forest

Great hike, even though the elevation just about did us flatlanders in. Beautiful views all the way up, but the best is at the top. Well worth the sore muscles to get there. As an added bonus we say a lone moose on the way down.

    Grant-Kohrs Ranch National Historic Site

Once the headquarters of a 10,000,000 acre, open-range, cattle empire, what today is Grant-Kohrs Ranch symbolizes the importance of cattle ranching in Montana, and the American west. The vast, unfenced grasslands served as rich feeding grounds for the large herds that promised riches for the ranchers flocking to the area. A “gold rush” to ranching, however, inevitably brought problems. Overgrazing, harsh weather, and the introduction of barbed-wire fencing brought the open range ranch in era to a close after only three decades.

They were a rugged set of men

They were a rugged set of men, these pioneers, well qualified for their self-assumed task. In the pursuit of wealth a few succeeded and the majority failed,…the range cattle industry has seen its inception, zenith, and partial extinction all within a half-century. The changes of the past have been many; those of the future may be of even more revolutionary character.
