🏔️ Monarch Pass: A High Country Welcome

We began our day with a brief but breathtaking stop at the summit of Monarch Pass (11,312 ft). The crisp mountain air and panoramic views of the Sawatch Range were a perfect way to kick off our journey into Colorado’s high country.

🌊 Curecanti National Recreation Area: Canyon and Reservoirs

Driving through Curecanti National Recreation Area, we followed the Gunnison River past steep canyon walls and shimmering reservoirs. This scenic corridor is a hidden gem, offering dramatic landscapes and hints of fall color.

🏞️ Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park: Nature’s Drama

Our main destination today was Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, where the canyon’s depth and steepness is stunning. We explored several overlooks along the South Rim:

• Tomichi Point – Our first dramatic view of the canyon

• Gunnison Point – A jaw-dropping look into the depths

• Pulpit Rock and Chasm View – Sheer vertical drops and narrow canyon walls

• Painted Wall – The tallest cliff in Colorado, streaked with ancient rock formations

We ended our visit with a peaceful hike to Warner Point, which offered sweeping views of the Uncompahgre Valley and distant San Juan Mountains.
